Your main staircase is likely the focal point when you step into your front door. In many homes, the staircase is at the very center of the house, taking guests and family members upstairs to a second floor retreat. Although it is often said that "the kitchen is the heart of the home", we would be remiss if we did not mention that the staircase is also a very piece.
If you are like most homeowners in the Scarborough, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, or even Oshawa, you likely have a home with golden oak handrails and spindles, along with whatever carpet the builder chose to install on the steps. This is a common look, and everybody has seen it when they walked into a home at one time or another. However, trends do change and carpet on stairs tends to be a recipe for dirt, stains, and difficult maintenance in a busy home. If you want to completely change the look of your home there is likely no better place to start than your old staircase. A Staircase Remodeler in the Durham Region can definitely make it happen!
If you already have a wood staircase that is in poor condition or simply out of date, the answer to your troubles may be in a complete refinishing job. This would include a detailed sanding of the existing components of your staircase, in order to remove the old finish and any scratches or defects. Upon completion of sanding, a new stain would be applied to completely change the look. When the stain dries (depending on how many coats you need) a top coat of finisher would be applied to seal and protect the wood. Finishes range from satin to high gloss, and can be water or oil based. There are benefits and features that should be discussed with your stair refinishing contractor prior to finish application on your staircase, such as slip resistance. If you are going to be installing a runner, a high gloss finish might be appropriate, as the walking surface on each tread would be covered by a carpet. A high gloss finish would be more slippery than a semi-gloss or even satin finish, so for applications that require more slip resistance a glossy finish may not be recommended.
